Augusta is the capital of Maine and the seat of Kennebec County and has a population of 21,325 (1990). It is located in south central Maine at the head of navigation on the Kennebec River and situated in the heart of rich timberlands. Its economic activities include steel manufacturing and food processing, and there are service-related industries. Attracted to the location by its navigable tidewater, settlers from Plymouth Colony arrived in 1628. It became the state capital in 1831, and the operation of state government also plays a considerable part in its economy. |
