{frank'-furt} Frankfort is the capital of Kentucky and the seat of Franklin County. The population of the city is 25,968 (1990 census). Frankfort is located in the north central part of the state, on the Kentucky River near a picturesque gorge. It is in the center of the famous bluegrass region noted for thoroughbred horses. Surrounded by fertile farmland, the city is a trade and distribution center for corn and burley tobacco. Its industries include a bourbon distillery and manufacturing plants for automobile parts, furniture, shoes, and candy. Frankfort was chosen as the capital in 1786, six years before Kentucky became a state. Many of Frankfort's stately homes date from its early period, notably Liberty Hall (1796) and the Orlando Brown House (1835). The Old Capitol, built (1827-29) of native limestone, now houses a historical museum. |
