The U.S.-Dakota War, also known as the Sioux Uprising, erupted in mid-August, sending many settlers fleeing east toward larger cities like Minneapolis, and prompting those who remained to fortify their locations with makeshift stockades or forts. One such fortification was Fort Harriman, or Fort Skedaddle, on the south shore of Pleasant Lake in Annandale.
