James Lomako sued Pasadena and its council members on Feb. 20, asking a judge to stop the March primary election. Lomako claims the city delayed going public for another six months, allowing council members Margaret McAustin, Gene Masuda and Steve Madison to run uncontested for their seats. Boyer forwarded a copy of a Feb. 17, 2015 letter addressed to Lomako . The letter says that Lomako asked for a blank nomination form on Feb. 13 this year, and returned it on Feb. 17 - but the filing deadline was Dec. 12, 2014.

So it's no wonder that the Plaza Pasadena of 1980, an early entry in Jerde's mall career, was overlooked. For those of us who hated the building and all it dismally represented for urban planning in the San Gabriel Valley, the place couldn't have been razed soon enough. And soon enough it was, with the Paseo Colorado rising in its place on Colorado Boulevard in 2001. Hulking, Moorish, gorgeous and worthy of a place on Barcelona's Las Ramblas. Preservation of good stuff in a city isn't about staying pretty. Pasadena is cut in two by the 210 Freeway.

The 1,526-square-foot Chalet Style Garfield House, listed at just under $3 million, built by Greene & Greene for Lucretia Garfield, widow of assassinated President James A. Garfield. Lucretia Garfield was an avid fan of architecture. Letters between her and Charles Greene, preserved in the Greene & Greene archives, reveal that the former first lady was intimately involved in the design of the home.

In politics they say "follow the money," and Larry Schroeder has been doing just that for nearly 40 years. With a background deeply rooted in finance, it's no wonder the council often defers to him for leadership when it comes to making the tough financial decisions needed to keep the city moving in a positive direction.
Meet The Garfield House, one of Southern California's prime examples of Craftsman architecture, an example made even primier by the designers of the South Pasadena home: Greene & Greene, the legendary team behind The Gamble House. The Greenes designed The Garfield House for Lucretia Garfield, widow to President James Garfield, and the home was completed in 1904. And you can own it, a century and a decade and a year after its debut. Well, the asking price is $2,995,000, so best take that into account before digging out your checkbook.

If you're confused about how to plant and maintain your devil's strip , you're not alone. The goal is compliance, not penalties, Oishi says. Los Angeles has the toughest regulations of all its neighbors and the most costly permit fees. And while other cities might be willing to see the parkway as an extension of the private frontyard and allow a range of modifications without permit, Los Angeles is not. The parkways, after all, are not, technically, private property, even though homeowners are legally obliged to maintain them at their own cost.
