The people of California overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50 with a 77.4 percent vote, amending the state constitution to allow state legislators to stop salaries, benefits, rights and other privileges of suspended fellow lawmakers with a two-thirds vote in the Assembly and Senate. Though legislators also approved the amendment with a wide margin - 31-1 in the Senate, with 91.18 percent and 73-2 in the Assembly, with 97.33 percent - the minority expressed two concerns about it.
MONTEBELLO >> A former Montebello police officer charged with slamming a tagging suspect's head into the pavement during an arrest will avoid jail time after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge Tuesday, authorities said. Mark Jason Ryan, 37, pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of assault under color of authority in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Los Angeles at what was scheduled to be a hearing to set a date for his preliminary hearing, L.A. County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Jane Robison said.
COMMERCE – A plan to bring recycled waste water to a 1,200-unit housing development in the Montebello hills has been delayed until Central Basin Municipal Water District officials determine if an environmental impact report is needed or has been done. After several Montebello environmental activists raised questions, Central Basin General Manager Kevin Hunt Monday asked the board to take off the agenda an agreement between his agency and the developer, Newport Beach-based Cook Hill Properties , to split the cost of a $1 million 16-inch water line on Montebello Boulevard from Lincoln Avenue about a mile north.
After news broke earlier this month that a construction project could threaten Brogueire's Dairy , longtime fans of the much-loved Montebello fixture took to social media to express outrage. Now, it looks as if the outcry has caused a change of heart: city officials this week scrapped plans to pursue the railroad-grade separate project that would have substantially lowered Maple Avenue to build an underpass, making Brogueire's driveway inaccessible from street level.
MONTEBELLO – As many as 10 employees, four of whom are part-time, could be laid off as a result of cuts made to a $51.9 million city general-fund budget approved Wednesday. The motocross community lost another great when Dewayne Jones, brother to AMA Motocross Champion Gary Jones, passed away at 12:56 A.M. on Sunday, June 19. Dewayne Jones had been battling cancer over the last five years, and it appeared he had beaten it less than a year ago, but the cancer returned in early 2016, this time taking his life. He was 65 years old.
