These horrendous images almost capture the true scale of the wildfires which have been ripping through California. But although they unleash the burning heat and unstoppable force of the fire, they cannot begin to show the devastation left in the path of the event. And fires aren't the only problems the state is experiencing, as it also has a water shortage to contend with. As reported on Space.com, the smoke from the fires, currently numbering more than 160, can be seen in images taken from space.

-- Three brush fires - two in the Angeles National Forest and one in Montebello - appeared Wednesday to be on their last legs, with none of them showing active flames. The other L.A.-area fire, burning on the remote upper slopes of the Angeles National Forest above Glendora, was 94 percent contained, authorities said Wednesday. Marc Peebles of the Forest Service said firefighters were now seeking out hot spots, having extinguished the remaining pockets of active fire. Friday near the Rincon-Red Box Road off Highway 39.

All of the above, and nausea and fatigue, are among the symptoms of ozone pollution, aka summer smog. One is burning in the Santa Clarita Valley, another in Montebello, and a third in the Angeles National Forest north of Glendora. Wildfires emit nitrogen oxides that form smog and were blamed for recent midafternoon spikes of ozone in Glendora and Pomona area, Cassmassi said. Doing so will require getting a large portion of the millions of vehicles now on the roads to have zero emissions, and cleaner engines to power heavy-duty trucks, he said.

You know the infernos are out of control when 25,000 firefighters aren't enough to stop them. The fire also burned a winery and lumber yard, KIRO said. Lightning strikes started the fires Friday morning, said Jim Duck of the Central Washington Interagency Communication Center. Over 1,000 people have fled Chelan County as the wildfires destroyed homes, CNN affiliate KPHO said. "I put everything I could in my car, got the animals and we bailed out," he told CNN affiliate KCPQ. "I'm trying not to think of all the stuff I lost," Smythe said.

For starters, the numbers can be complicated and misleading. Land than in the first eight months of any year over the last decade, according to data published by national fire officials on Monday. That's larger than the state of Vermont, and a 50% increase over the last decade's average of 4.8 million acres burned over the same period from January to August. But the truth is more complicated. "There's going to be fires every year. "We're mobilizing fire crews to send to the Lower 48 right now," said Harrel, of the Alaska Fire Service.

Wright said there were still hot spots, with small areas of active flames. Sunday in the Rio Hondo riverbed, near the Whittier Narrows Reservoir. He said the Los Angeles County fire personnel were injured when a department helicopter made a hard landing at Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Whittier. Luis Lopez said Lincoln Avenue from Azalea Drive to San Gabriel Boulevard is closed for at least three days. Santa Avenue and Durfee Avenue in South El Monte was also shut down, according to deputies.

Fire crews were stepping up their attack Monday against wildfires that have destroyed dozens of homes and forced hundreds to flee in Western states. Calmer weather on Sunday helped firefighters tighten their grip on the blazes, but dry, hot weather is expected in the days ahead. Scores of homes remain threatened. Helicopters have been dipping into Lake Chelan to pull up water to battle blazes north of the lake. The Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit says over 4,000 lightning strikes hit northwestern Colorado on Saturday and Sunday.

Smoke from the Lincoln, Warm and Cabin fires was taking a toll on air quality in the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys, where the South Coast Air Quality Management District warned that air quality could reach unhealthful levels. The AQMD issued a smoke advisory, warning people downwind of the fires to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. The 225-acre Lincoln Fire that broke out Sunday in the Montebello area was 60 percent contained as of this morning.

Scorching temperatures remain a concern today as the heat could cause hotspots to reignite in the area. Firefighters were sent to the Rio Hondo riverbed near Lincoln and La Merced avenues. "It did have that dry brush. According to Southern California Edison, 10 poles fell as a result of the damage. Officials reported about 12 transients were removed from the area of the blaze. According to police, a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire on Sunday. He will be charged with arson and negligent fire.

Temperatures will be 5 to 7 degrees cooler Monday than Sunday but will remain hot for most areas in the valleys and mountains, according to the National Weather Service. In Montebello, the 200-acre Lincoln fire prompted officials to close the 60 Freeway in the area and evacuate the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, including Legg Lake and the shooting range. Flames have spread into the Montebello Hills and the nearby PXP oil field, forcing operations there to shut down, officials said. The causes of the other two fires were under investigation.

As of 11:30 p.m., the so-called Lincoln Fire in Montebello had scorched about 200 acres and was 20 percent contained, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. All lanes of the eastbound 60 Freeway at San Gabriel Boulevard were temporarily closed due to the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. August 17, 2015 Just after 5 p.m., a young man who had been walking around the fire after being asked to leave from a dangerous area was detained by deputies, according to Dan Amador of the Montebello Fire Department.

-- A wildfire that broke out in northern Los Angeles County has burned at least six structures and 100 acres. Fire officials say the fire was sparked Sunday afternoon near Lake Castaic. Brian Allen told KABC-TV the fire damaged several structures at a former rehabilitation center before marching into the Angeles National Forest. Meanwhile, firefighters are battling a brush fire that began near a riverbed in Montebello and burned about 20 acres of brush. One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion while battling the blaze.
