Los Angeles County sheriff's officials offered tips to more than 50 La Crescenta residents on Monday after a string of recent home break-ins have left neighbors worried about their safety. Since January, 19 burglaries, which includes residential and commercial break-ins, were reported in the unincorporated area of La Crescenta, according to Crescenta Valley Station Capt. Residents should notify the sheriff's department if they're leaving town and for how long, as authorities will send volunteer patrols to check on the house.

A final management plan will be drafted by the forest service and will go to Forest Supervisor Jeffrey Vail for final consideration. Vail attended the meeting and said the goal of the new management plan is to create a vision of a forest that's relevant to future generations. The La Crescenta tower, slated to go up at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station, is one of 83 towers proposed throughout the county. La Crescenta resident Eric Sherman pointed to his son, a student at Mountain Avenue Elementary School, who was born with eye cancer. "This is another big step to make this a safe place to live," said longtime La Crescenta resident Kent Woodward. In a 5-3 vote, the Crescenta Valley Town Council's Land-Use Committee recommended approval of the tower's construction.
