HAWTHORNE - A 25-year-old man was booked early Friday for the murder of a woman in Hawthorne. The woman was hit after Bass was arguing with the victim's 32-year-old daughter in front of the Doty Avenue location, Schrader said. The daughter suffered minor injuries, Schrader added. Her name was withheld pending family notification. Bass was scheduled to go to court on March 3 for arraignment on the charge. HAWTHORNE >> A man arguing with a woman in Hawthorne ran over her mother with his car as he drove away, killing her, deputies said today. Amir Bass, 25, was arrested on suspicion of murder a short time after the incident occurred Thursday night, deputies said. Bass was arguing with a woman at about 8:35 p.m. in the 13300 block of Doty Avenue when he struck the 67-year-old woman with his car. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police located Bass and arrested him. The victim's name was not immediately available.
Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX, the Los Angeles area rocket and spacecraft company, has scored two new launch agreements, this time with Luxembourg-based SES . SES said this morning that it has signed a deal for SpaceX to launch two satellites--SES-14 and SES-16/GovSat-- - into orbit in 2017. Financial impact of the deal was not announced. SES-14 iss a KU- and Ka-band satellite being used for video and data. SES-16/GovSat is a military satellite covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Brian Melendrez is afraid of heights. Melendrez, who lives in Hawthorne and works nights at Costco, realized that the child was in fact a young man he'd seen "moping around" on the pier earlier. Melendrez's boss, Ted Brown, threw a life ring that had been hanging off the pier down to the two men below. Firefighter David Schwarting, whom Shenbaum said had just successfully passed the swim test, also jumped in. While Schwarting and Shenbaum helped the men in the water, lifeguards arrived. DOWNEY - Donald L. Burns passed away Jan. 22 with his family by his side. Born Dec. 1, 1939 to Paul and Marguerite Burns in Glendale, Don grew up in Hawthorne and went to Leusinger High School in Lawndale. Don and Helen moved to Gresham, Ore., in 1995. He was an active member of "Friends of Johnie's", which was instrumental in saving the Harvey's Broiler structure from being demolished in 2007, which now stands as Bob's Big Boy.
