Elon Musk's Hyperloop concept has sparked the imaginations of entrepreneurs and investors across the country. But perhaps the folks making the most progress on the futuristic tube travel idea are actually students. Earlier this year we learned about UCLA's Suprastudio, a one-year master architect program, that took on the challenge of designing a Hyperloop system. As of 5 p.m. Friday, the fire was 29 percent contained. Nearly 1,200 firefighters are battling the blaze, with 34 hand crews, 53 engines, 12 water tenders, 11 helicopters and support personnel, according to fire spokesman Jose Acosta. A 22-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter in connection with a deadly Hawthorne vehicle crash six months ago, police said. Moore was at the wheel of a Ford Taurus that crashed into a Dodge Charger on Dec. 24, critically injuring the driver, 34-year-old Ulises Lopez. Following the crash, Hawthorne investigators determined that Moore had been speeding, was under the influence of marijuana, and had run a red light at Yukon Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard, resulting in the collision, police said.
Musk's Hyperloop pod competition has received more than 700 entries since the contest was announced last Monday. On Monday, SpaceX tweeted the news. Currently, the sign-up process is pretty simple. Since then, a few entrepreneurs have also invested in making the Hyperloop a reality and have launched startups to get the project off the ground. Hyperloop Technologies and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies are two of the key companies developing these technologies they have no affiliation with SpaceX and Musk.
According to the internship listing, only the most driven candidates need apply. Blake Robbins, another former intern who worked at SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, said he was given a few hypothetical situations to reason his way through. "One of the questions they asked me was, ' If Elon said to you something like, 'I need hundreds of this one part by the end of the week,' but the supplier says they need three months to make it, what would you say?'" Unrelated shootings in two parks -- one in Los Angeles and one in Hawthorne -- left three people wounded Saturday afternoon. She was in the park with several others but was the only one injured. LAPDÂ Sgt. James Linder said about 25 shots were fired from what was probably an AK-47-style assault rifle. About an hour earlier in Hawthorne, a man with a semi-automatic handgun shot two other men in Holly Park at 120th Street and Van Ness Avenue, according to Hawthorne police. Brian Scott Burlingame of Hawthorne was charged with spousal abuse and cruelty to animals in connection with the Sunday night violence, prosecutors said. Transport visionaries: Are you ready to zoom into the annals of history? SpaceX, the commercial spaceflight company run by Elon Musk, has announced a competition to design prototypes of his futuristic " Hyperloop " transport system. The theoretical Hyperloop would transport passengers at superfast speeds by sending pods cushioned by air through a low-pressure vacuum tube. The goal of the competition is to accelerate the development of the concept.
But the most challenging aspect for the 17-year-old at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology came during her senior year, when Thomas had her third complete reconstructive surgery to her hips in two years; another is scheduled just days after graduation on Saturday. SpaceX officials said that on top of the prize money, Thomas is invited to visit the company's factory and meet with women who work at SpaceX for mentoring opportunities. Despite all of her medical setbacks, another victory will come Saturday, Thomas said.
